Long awaited launch of Morgenster 2005 in the
year of 5s
Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate in the picturesque Helderberg
ward of Stellenbosch launched its long awaited Morgenster 2005 Bordeaux
blend at the Estate on Thursday 5th March 2009. Consulting winemaker
Pierre Lurton from Chateau Cheval Blanc, St Emillon Bordeaux , who has
been involved with the label from the start, was present to mark a year
which is heavy with “Big 5” significance for Morgenster.
For only the second time in the 5 releases of this label, the
blend comprises only 2 Bordeaux cultivars. Interestingly the other
vintage was 2000, the maiden vintage that obtained a Decanter 5
award.
The 2005 vintage is the 5th release of the Morgenster label and
its 5th nomination for 5 stars. Garnering the long coveted 5 star John
Platter award at last, is all the sweeter for the long wait!
The year chosen for the launch of the 2005 vintage is the 15th
year since Giulio Bertrand, having come out of retirement, started his
venture to produce Bordeaux style wines of excellence from vines he
planted on the rolling hills behind his “retirement home” of
historical Morgenster.
The 2005 vintage was made by Morgenster winemaker Marius Lategan
who celebrates his 50th birthday and his 25th anniversary in the wine
industry this year.
Morgenster is unique in simultaneously offering five vintages,
2000 – 2005 (with the exception of 2002), to the trade and the
public in line with its philosophy of allowing its wines to evolve
before releasing them. While it is drinking very well already, laying
down the 2005 now will mean you will be well rewarded in 5, 15, or even
25 years.
