Marius Lategan started his wine making career in the mid eighties at Bergkelder. He then went on to become Assistant-Winemaker at Kleine Zalze before the farm was put up for sale in 1994. Marius then moved to Vlottenburg in Stellenbosch where he worked as the Winemaker first for the Eerste Rivier Winecellar and then at the Verdun Estate. Marius has made several trips to the Northern Hemisphere to gain International crush experience, including trips to France, Italy and California.

He took up residence as Morgenster's Oenologist/Winemaker in 2000 but had already started working with Giulio Bertrand planning the estate's wine making in 1999. Marius has overseen the successful launch of both of Morgenster's labels - Lourens River Valley, and their flagship label Morgenster.
