Giulio Bertrand had a vision to produce
world-class Bordeaux style wines on his own estate. His initial
appraisal of the Morgenster terroir turned out to be accurate, as
subsequent analysis has revealed a number of favourable attributes.
The natural amphitheatre created by the Helderberg and
Hottentots Holland mountains, creates a unique macro-climatic
environment. The rocky, weathered Shale-type soil found on this
terroir allows for a well drained structure: highly regarded for
producing quality wines because of the moderate vigour induced in the
vines. The Mediterranean-type climate with north, north west and north
east facing aspects allow for maximum sunlight penetration, and cool
breezes off False Bay add the necessary cooling effects in order to
produce optimal ripe delicate fruit flavour.
The first new vineyards were planted in 1994. Today,
approximately 30 ha are under mainly Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon,
Cabernet franc and a plot of Petit Verdot. Special clones were
selected and adapted for red wine blending - our forte.
